  • Buy a higher grade or higher efficiency filter. Newer high-efficiency filters have an electrostatic charge that grabs tiny particles out of the air, including those that carry bacteria that can make your family sick. You also want to make sure you’re replacing your furnace filters at least every 90 days, but you should be checking it monthly to see if it needs to be changed earlier. If you have a household with pets you will probably need to change the filter more often.
  • You should inspect the insulation on any refrigerant lines leading into the house monthly and replace them if they are missing or damaged.
  • In the fall before you turn on the heat, you can shut off the water supply to the furnace humidifier and replace the humidifier wick filter before turning it back on, this way it will be clean and ready for when you use the furnace.
  • Make sure no more than 20% of the home’s registers are closed to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the HVAC system.
  • Replace the battery in your home’s carbon monoxide detector annually.

  • Make sure there’s plenty of space around your outdoor air conditioning units and heat pumps, this clearance will make sure that air intake isn’t restricted. You also want to make sure these areas are free of debris such as leaves, pollen, twigs, and grass clippings. In the winter season there are lots of loose leaves that blow around in the winter wind and can collect around the outdoor units and between the house. It is good practice to clear out the area once weekly to keep the task simple and make sure your unit is functioning correctly.
  • While you are checking your outdoor units, make sure that these units are sitting level and are on firm ground or a solid pad.

It’s a good idea to have a professional inspect and perform maintenance on your system every fall and spring. If you need help performing any annual maintenance or would like to schedule an appointment, give us a call at 757-566-7014.
