Regularly changing your home’s air filter(s) is the secret to an efficient and long-living HVAC system. Clean filters help cut down your home heating and cooling costs, while dirty filters make your HVAC system work harder and use more energy. Additionally, clean filters reduce indoor pollution and allergens. For clean air, changing your filters regularly is a must!
So what’s the #1 sign it’s time to change your air filters?
Easy: dirty filters!
Not all filters are as visibly dirty as the picture above. If you’re unsure whether changing time has arrived for your home, here is an easy guideline of how frequently you should change out your filters:
- 1 person home without pets or allergies: 6-12 months
- 2+ person home without pets: every 90 days-
- 2+ person home with a dog or cat: every 60 days
- 2+ person home with 2+ pets or have allergies: 30-45 days
You don’t need a professional to change your home’s air filters. Simply slide the filter (usually located on the right side of your HVAC unit) out from the furnace, and slide the new one into place. Don’t forget to check what size filter you need before buying the new one at your local hardware store! Look on the filter’s side to find the printed filter size.
